Excited about your zombie costume? You might might want to pass on the contacts…

This time of year there is always an increased interest in cosmetic contact lenses that drastically change eye color.  While these lenses may make that Lady Gaga costume really come to life, they come with many ocular health risks.  Dr. Justin Ward explains…

“Many individuals do not realize that contact lenses are medical devices, much like syringes or inhalers.  Finding the right contact lens is a technical process that involves measuring the curvature of the eye and finding the right fitting lens.  Much like shoes, they are not one size fits all.  Also, the lens material that most cosmetic lenses are made from is not very permeable to oxygen.  This can deprive the cornea of oxygen and greatly increase the risk of infection.”

Contact lenses are prescription devices and it is illegal to buy or sell contact lenses without an authorized prescription from an eye care professional.  There have been many reports of gas stations and mall kiosks selling cosmetic lenses without a prescription.  Longview Eye Associates recommends steering clear of these lenses and reporting these businesses to the proper authorities.

With a proper ocular health examination and contact lens fitting, colored contact lenses can be a safe and fun way to enhance or change your natural eye color, but without the expertise of an eye care professional, these lenses can cause sight-threatening damage.

All of us here at Longview Eye Associates hope you have a safe and happy Halloween!

World Sight Day is October 13th

World Sight Day is an annual day of awareness to focus attention on the global issue of avoidable blindness.  Optos is participating participating in the World Sight Day Challenge in conjunction by donating $1 per optomap  performed on this day to further the goals of Vision2020.  Vision2020 is a joint venture between the World Health Organization and the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness.

According to the World Health Organization, 80% of all visual impairment can be avoided or cured, and 90% of the world’s visually impaired people live in developing countries.  The doctors of Longview Eye Associates are proud to participate in this program and are encouraging all our patients on October 13th to consider the optomap retinal examination.  We thank you for the continued honor to serve the Longivew area as well as participating in the effort to prevent blindness around the world.
